Hauptzutaten: Sommer, Hector, Mountainbikes. Garniert mit Kirschen, aber dazu später mehr. Zunächst nutzen wir den Brückentag, um unter größtmöglicher Gardasee-Umfahrung in Richtung Nord-Ost zu fahren, zum Azur-Camping in Regensburg.

Wir haben keinen Stau, aber viel Sonne. Viel vor, und doch ergibt sich alles spontan. Zunächst der Stadtbummel, die berühmte Wurstküche, die steinerne Brücke und natürlich das Herzchen-Feuerwerk. Unser Timing ist exzellent, denn es wird stündlich sommerlicher – ein Mikro-Urlaub!

Based on an assortment of touristic hot spots, we follow our instincts in this beautiful, historic town. The famous sausages from Germany’s oldest Wurstkucherl are as excellent as expensive – no regrets. While millions of tourists go South, we have splendid conditions for this micro holiday at the danube river.

Freitag war noch Stadtbummel und alte Steine, Samstag geht es auf die Räder. Entlang der Donau haben wir die Radwege für uns, den finalen Anstieg zur Walhalla-Ruhmeshalle nicht mehr ganz. Dafür belohnt uns oben der Ausblick.

Friday is perfect for a promenade at the historic centre, then we use the bikes for a tour towards Walhalla. The bike route follows the Danube, easy enough with exception to the final ascent. Still, the gained height rewards us with wonderful view.s

Die Ruhmeshalle ist irgendwie lustig. Altgrieche meets Steinbüsten, Gigantismus meets „theutsch“-sprachige Köpfe.

Leo von Klenze, known to all Munich inhabitants for impressing architecture, established a beautiful, yet strange building, following the orders of Ludwig I.

Die Zusammenstellung der Auserwählten folgt einer sehr eigenen Logik, aber es sind auch persönliche Heroen darunter.

I present greetings to my personal heroes, before we explore the outer parts of the hall.

Walhalla klingt schon so, als wäre es anlässlich einer feucht-fröhlichen Runde entstanden. Die Ästhetik folgt dieser Idee.

Form follows function, in this case: form follows powerful regent’s in their wine-based wishes for… for glory? I have to admit that the core idea of the hall of fame remains slightly beyond my pragmatical way of life. Still, it is a funny place to see.

Am meisten fasziniert mich, dass sie auf vernünftige Besucher bauen. Kein Geländer, kein Security-Gedöns. Ein nettes Ziel für eine Radtour und jeder lässt sich dort nieder, wo er sich wohlfühlt.

Lucky enough, most people have enough brains to watch their steps. So far, no ceiling blocks the views and it turns this historical place into a relaxed spot for sun-seekers.

Es wäre eine famose Kulisse für „Hulk gegen die alten Griechen“…

If not for the marble heads of the hall, the scenery might work well for a movie such as “Hulk against ancient Greeks…”

… oder für waghalsiges Yoga…

… or serve as background for daring yoga classes…

Auf jeden Fall sehr hübsch. Der Rest des Wochenendes besteht vor allem aus Genuss: Riesige Eisbecher (Amarena-Kirschen satt!) an der Steinernen Brücke, Steaks vom Grill zwischen Marathonläufern, Yoga am See. Nur an Fotos davon hat wieder keiner gedacht.

Whatever you make out of it, the Walhalla is worth a bike tour. As culture leaves everybody hungry, we rewarded ourselves with giant sundaes (Steinerne Brücke, garnished with umpteen Amarena cherries!), barbecue in front of the annual marathon race and feelgood-yoga at the lake. Too bad that nobody has bothered to take pictures…
