„Wildswimming Frankreich“, das Buch hat mich hierher gelockt. Genauer: die Bilder von den Cascades du Hérisson.

“Wildswimming France”, that has been the initial spark for my Jura-micro holidays. The book is full of ideas, where to jump into a river, a lake or anything in between, such as waterfalls.

Der erste Wasserfall ist ein Hochstapler mit wenig Wasser, und doch mag ich es hier: keine Absperrung, keine Park Ranger, kein Eintritt. Je nach Schuhwerk kann jeder seine bevorzugte Perspektive einnehmen, ob von oben oder lieber hinter dem Wasserfall-Vorhang.

The path along the waterfalls is the touristic highlight around here. It starts with a high, but thin intro. What I like best is the free access: no entrance fee, no barriers – you can easily walk behind the waterfall and choose your preferred perspective.

Die Wanderung entlang der Wasserfälle und Gumpen ist das Highlight der Region, und es lohnt sich. Nach dem ersten Wasserfall taucht der Weg ein in lichten Laubwald, es wird mit jedem Schritt zauberhafter.

From here, the route leads to a light forest. Guess 9:30 a.m. is too little too late for flying elves, yet the surrounding enfolds it’s charm.

Von einer historischen Mühle stehen nur noch Grundmauern, aber auch das passt hier gut rein.

Leftovers from a historic mill tell the story of ancient times, when tourism was a luxury for royals only.

Ich wandere weiter, noch ist es recht leer um mich herum. Was für eine wundervolle Gegend das ist! Wasser und Wein sind beide gleichermaßen lohnenswert in diesem Zipfel Frankreichs.

At this hour, few people follow the path through this picturesque landscape. Obviously, water and wine are both worth a trip in this Eastern corner of France.

Die Wasserfälle und Gumpen sind südwestlich ausgerichtet, die wenigen Meter mit tieferem Gewässer liegen noch im Schatten. Ich entscheide mich für das Nächstgelegene und laufe ein wenig über’s Wasser, soll mein Bikini sich ruhig mal langweilen!

The waterfalls face West and their water basins are shady during morning hours. Consequently, I ignore the bikinis in my backpack, and decide to walk on the wet surface for a change.

Wenn ich das nächste Mal in der Gegend bin, probiere ich es Nachmittags. Außerdem passen meine rosa Badeschuhe bestimmt prima in die Gegend, die Flusskiesel sind nämlich sehr spitz.

Mental note to myself: next time, I will choose a sunny afternoon and get more into swimming. And, despite the massage effect of the rough pebbles, it might be a good idea to add pink swimming shoes to the picture.

Inzwischen kommen minütlich mehr Touristen entlang des Wegs. Zudem werden die Pfade flussabwärts immer rutschiger, das Ausweichen wird kompliziert. Egal, was der Fluss noch an Kaskaden zu bieten hat, die magische Stimmung der ersten Stunden lässt nach. Ich wandere zurück und gönne mir ein köstliches Mittagessen in der Auberge du Hérisson.

Meanwhile, more and more tourists, groups of tourists and families shuffle in. The peaceful atmosphere of the first hours fades, so I change my focus, heading for lunch at the Auberge du Hérisson. Someday, I will come back to soak in the light and the fairytale scenery once again.
