Travelhector

Ich hatte davon gelesen, gehört und es bei The Film People gesehen: eine Wüste mitten in Europa, noch dazu mit einem Camping-Stellplatz und verlassenen Höhlen-Wohnungen. Wenn schon Nordspanien als Umrundung Frankreichs gilt, dann hänge ich diesen Abstecher mit dran.

Having stumbled over the existence of a European desert (last but not least by The Film People), it surely became a fix destination for my trip. As I have come to take Northern Spain as part of the surrounding-France-route, I can easily make a detour to Southern Pamplona and then proceed to the camper parking beneath the former cave houses.

Unterwegs wird schnell klar, dass sie hier viel Gegend haben. Und Landschaft.

Few kilometres in Spain are enough to understand, that they have quite a lot of landscape here.

Mitten im Nirgendwo, irgendwo südlich von Pamplona, rolle ich dann auf die Fehls-Wohnungen zu. Die Gegend ist bizarr, aber es stehen bereits einige Wohnmobile herum, ich bin also richtig.

Deep in the middle of Nowhere, I roll straight towards the caves. The sight of other  campers proves me in the right spot.

Ein südfranzösischer Camping-Nachbar führt mich zu den schönsten der Höhlen-Behausungen und bewahrt mich vor den geschändeten (vermüllten). Eigentlich gibt es nicht viel zu sehen, nur verschachtelte Räume mit wenig Fensteröffnungen. Eine der Wohnungen wurde mit Farbe und ein wenig Mobiliar aufgehübscht, aber es wirkt irgendwie gefälscht.

I park next to a French pensioner who declares that he has nothing better to do than show me the best caves (and spare me the garbage-ones). In fact, there is not much to be seen, just one room behind the other with few daylight, being sort of construction-immanent for this kind of housing. One of the former flats has been decorated slightly, but still, it looks more fake than anything.

Mit Hector im direkten Vergleich ist eh klar, wer gewinnt. Mein Super-Bus ist beweglich, lichtdurchflutet und bequem; so ziemlich das Gegenteil einer Felshöhle.

Of course, Hector is beyond competition. My van is all but flexible, light and comfy, hence the opposite of inhabiting a cave.

Am nächsten Morgen starte ich um 8:00 Uhr zum Naturschutzgebiet der Halbwüste Bardenas Reales. Das Besucher-Infozentrum ist zwar noch geschlossen, aber die Routen durch das Gebiet sind online und am interaktiven Bildschirm am Parkplatz verfügbar. Die beste Info hat jedoch der Michael Müller Verlag: am Militär-Stützpunkt links, dann noch 4 km bis zum markantesten Steinhaufen.

At 8:00 in the morning, I fire up Hector and we make our way to the nature resort of the desert (“half-desert”, to be more precise). The tourist information centre will not start before 9:00, but the car routes through the area can be looked up online or on the interactive screen in front of the building. Still, the best hint comes from my travelbook (Michael-Müller): go straight to the military entrance, turn left and then follow the dirt-road for 4 km until the most famous rocks.

Die Beschilderung ist sensationell schlecht, sowohl für Autos wie auch für Mountainbiker und Wanderer. Die wenigen Menschen, die so früh unterwegs sind, irren mehr umher als dass sie ihre Wege finden. Ist ja auch nicht so wichtig, solange niemand versehentlich in das Militärgebiet gerät, das sich gelegentlich durch kleine Hinweisschilder verrät.

Signposting is remarkably bad (for cars, mountain-bikes and hikers just the same), yet it is probably not that important. As long as you avoid to enter the military ground, that is. At least, they have some inconspicuous signs for it.

Keine Ahnung, warum alle anderen warten, bis es heiß und voll ist. Ich bin froh, dass ich die Schotterpisten für mich allein habe und das Licht noch ein wenig morgendliche Frische bereithält.

I am glad to have the gravel roads all by myself, giving Hector as much freedom and fun as possible. Furthermore, the desert as a somewhat lost area is much more impressive when you hardly see any lifeform around.

Am markantesten Felsen steht eine Handy-Selfie-Halterung. Hector parkt ein paar Meter entfernt und ich nehme mir die Zeit, ein wenig mit der Umgebung zu spielen. Sie nachzubilden, herumzuspringen, zu tanzen und was man eben so tut, wenn man allein in der Wüste ist.

The best photo-spot is equipped with a cell-phone-holder, inviting all influencers or regular tourists to play with the scenery. I try my best to imitate my surrounding, jump and dance; doing whatever is most fun when being alone in a desert.

Hector, der bekanntlich alles kann, meistert die Schotterpiste mit eleganter Nonchalance. Er ist ja auch der Größte!

Hector has shown-off like a 4-wheel-super-vehicle, all fine even with rough ground. Still the greatest!
