Von Scopello aus fahren wir über Palermo mit dem Linienbus nach Catania. Der Blick auf den Ätna wird uns die kommenden Tage begleiten, mal mit, mal ohne Wolken-Hut. Erstaunlich, dass 3.000m Höhe so wenig wuchtig aussehen, nur weil er so in die Breite gewachsen ist – aber ich will nicht sticheln, sonst fühlt sich der Vulkan noch provoziert.

From Scopello, we take the bus to Catania via Palermo. The view of Mount Etna will accompany us for the next few days, sometimes with, sometimes without a cloud hat. It is astonishing that the height of 3,000 meters does not look massive, just because it has grown so wide. However, I try not to tease, otherwise the volcano might feel provoked.

Hoch über den Dächern eines alten Palazzo steht eine Art Tiny House: schmal, eng, dreistöckig – sofern man die Dachterrasse im 5. Stock als untere Basis zählt.

High above the roofs of an old palazzo stands a tiny house: narrow, cramped, three storeys counted from the roof terrace on the 5th floor.

Die untere Dachterrasse hat gut 30 m² und Traumblick auf den Ätna, die Altstadt und ein bisschen blaues Meer. Ein Air BnB so wunderbar, dass man gar nicht auf die Idee kommt, nach so etwas zu suchen – man muss es finden (oder eine schlaue Schwester haben, die sowas kann).

The lower of our roof terraces has a good 30 m² and a view that covers Mount Etna, the old town and a bit of blue sea. An Air BnB so wonderful that you would never dare searching for it (best is to have a clever sister who simply finds best out-of-the-box accommodations).

Größter Raum ist die Wohnküche direkt hinter der Eingangstür. Da das Bett im Schlafzimmer (einen Stock höher) sehr schmal ist, breite ich hier meine Thermarest aus. Unglaublich, wie gut man auf einer 7cm dicken, superleichten Luftmatratze schlafen kann! Ist wie Camping, nur ohne Hector und mitten in der Stadt.

The largest room is the kitchen-living room behind the front door. As the bed in the bedroom (one floor up) is quite narrow, I spread out my Thermarest here. It is unbelievable how well you can sleep on a 7 cm thick, super-light air mattress! It is like camping, but without Hector and city-based.

Zu unseren Füßen liegt der schönste Teil von Catania: entlang des groben Pflasters aus schwarzen Lavasteinen tummelt sich die beste Auswahl an Bars, Restaurants und Kirchen.

The most beautiful part of Catania lies at our feet, with a choice of bars, restaurants and churches lined up along the rough pavement of black lava stones.

Wir wollen es genau wissen und zählen: um unsere Home-Base zu erreichen, steigen wir 104 Stufen hoch – nur wenig mehr als die 101 Kirchen & sakrale Paläste, die Catania zu bieten hat.

Talking about churches and their almost inappropriate quantity, we get into details and count: to reach our home base, we climb 104 steps – just a little more than the 101 churches & sacred palaces that Catania has to offer.

Während die meisten Kirchen fast um die Uhr verschlossen sind (Ausnahmen sind die täglichen Hochzeiten), haben wir zum Glück einen Schlüssel zu unserer Wohnung. Und die besten Gastgeber der Welt: zur Ankunft stehen Wasser, Wein und Bier bereit, nur falls wir keine Lust auf Gastronomie haben. Es ist auch zu verlockend, abends den Sonnenuntergang von einer unserer Dachterrassen zu verfolgen.

While most churches are locked whenever we try to sneak in with exceptions only for daily weddings, we fortunately have a key to our apartment. And the best hosts in the world: water, wine and beer are waiting for us on arrival, just in case we don’t feel like eating out. Right they are, as it is tempting to watch the sunset from one of our roof terraces.

Am nächsten Tag erkunden wir den endlosen Sandstrand Catanias. Anfang September ist kaum etwas los, man muss schon schauen, wie man sich die Zeit vertreibt. Zum Glück gibt es das tiefschürfende Sandburgprojekt von zwei jungen Männern, und gelegentlich ein Flugzeug.

The next day, we explore Catania’s endless sandy beach. It is vast and, given the season, far from being crowded, so you have to find a way to pass the time. Fortunately, there is the deep-digging sandcastle project by two young men, and occasionally an airplane. Apart from those highlights, it is calm and relaxing.

Zur Hauptsaison mag es hier tausende Sonnenschirme, Sonnenliegen und Holzhäuschen geben, doch im Moment ist es ein zauberhafter „lost place“.

In July and August, thousands of parasols and wooden shacks will spread over the area. Today, it feels a bit like a lost place which is fine by us.

Das Wetter ist perfekt: zunächst bewölkt, für entspannte Stunden ohne Hitzekoller. Anschließend sonnig und warm, für mehr Eintauchen und Urlaubsfeeling. Typisch für erholsame Stunden ist die Gefahr von aufkommender Langeweile – nur so lässt sich erklären, warum ich plötzlich Moonwalk üben will…

The weather is perfect: initially cloudy, for relaxing hours without heat exhaustion. Then sunny and warm, deepening the vacation feeling. We even face the risk of boredom, better known as deep calm for body and mind. It might explain why I am up to practise moonwalking across the beach…

Auf dem Rückweg kommen wir durch eine Gasse, in der sich unzählige kleine Bars und Restaurants aufreihen, alle mit Tischen und Stühlen draußen, alle schattig dank der Regenschirme am Himmel. Tolle Idee!

On the way back, we pass through an alleyway lined with countless small restaurants with tables and chairs outside, all shaded thanks to a sky full of umbrellas. What a great idea!

Am Abend treiben wir durch die Gassen und suchen uns die beste Pizzeria aus. Alles, was hier auf den Teller kommt (und darüber hinausragt), ist so gut wie groß. Sensationell lecker, auch wenn es die glutenfreien Köstlichkeiten leider nur abends gibt – aus unerfindlichen Gründen feuern sie den Pizzaofen mittags nicht an.

In the evening, we stroll through the alleyways and look for the best pizzeria. Everything that comes on the plate here (and goes beyond it) is as good as it is big. Only later we will find out that the home-made gluten-free delicacies are available only in the evening. For some unknown reason, they do not fire up the pizza oven at lunchtime, which is such a pity.

Wir stromern noch mehr durch die abendliche Stadt. Ist da eine Studentenparty oder hören wir das Stadion? Was gibt es live im Park und wo ist die Weinbar, die auch bei Regen draußen Tische bietet?

Tonight, we continue to stroll through the city. Is there a party at the student’s house? Or is it the noise from today’s football match at the stadium? What’s on in the park and where is the wine bar with outside tables framed by a gallery?

Am schönsten ist unser Dachterrassen-Tiny-House über den Dächern der Stadt. Am zweitschönsten ist die Mischung: Gebäude und Menschen sind meistens schön und oft eigentümlich. Und dann steht mittendrin ein Elefant aus Lava – wie könnte man diese Stadt nicht lieben?!

The most beautiful is our terrace high above the city. Next in the ranking is the mix: buildings and people are mostly beautiful and often peculiar around here. And then there is the monument of an elephant, made of lava – how could you not love this city?

Bevor ich abfliege, will ich natürlich auch das antike Theater sehen. Nicht nur, weil wir fast gegenüber wohnen, sondern auch, weil es (natürlich) besonders ist: im Kern erbaut von den Griechen. Dann umgebaut und erweitert von den Römern, die auch gleich noch ein zweites, kleineres Amphitheater neben das von ihnen erweiterte große gebaut haben. Später haben dann die Sizilianer ihre Häuser darauf gebaut – also: auf Teile der antiken Theater. Vor rd. 50 Jahren wurde das unterbunden, so dass nun mitten zwischen Wohnhäusern wieder Aufführungen möglich sind.

Sure enough, I will not leave without seeing the ancient theatre. Not only because we live almost opposite, but also because it is (of course) special: the core had been built by the Greeks. Then rebuilt and extended by the Romans, who also added a second, smaller amphitheatre next to the original one. Later, the Sicilians built their houses right on top of it – in other words, on parts of the antique theatres. This habit was stopped only 50 years ago, and now performances are once more enabled, surrounded by residential buildings.

Zu guter Letzt entdecken wir ein wahres Kleinod in der Stadt. Die Juristische Fakultät ist der perfekte Ort, um der Mittagshitze zu entfliehen: schattige Bänke, viel Ruhe und gelegentlich ein junger Student, der es total normal findet, in einem alten Palazzo zu studieren. Wir fügen uns unauffällig in die Umgebung ein und warten darauf, dass die nahe gelegenen Restaurants öffnen.

Last but not least, we discover a real gem: The Faculty of Law is the perfect place to escape the midday heat. Shady benches, plenty of peace and quiet, with young students passing by occasionally. We blend into the surroundings unobtrusively while waiting for the nearby restaurants to open.

Nach acht Tagen endet mein ausgedehnter Sizilien-Urlaub. Ich glaube, das Konzept des Mit-Urlaubens nutze ich jetzt häufiger. Ohne meine Schwester hätte ich Catania sicher nicht so schön kennen gelernt, was für eine prima Gelegenheit! Für die kommenden Wochen freue ich mich nun auf ein Mücken-freies Klima (8°C und Regen) und noch mehr auf einen tip-top-reparierten Hector.

After eight days, Sicily vacation comes to an end. Guess I will explore this new concept of shadowing others in their holiday routine more often. Without my sister, I certainly would not have gotten to dive into Catania so well, it has been a great opportunity! For the next days and weeks, I am looking forward to a mosquito-free climate (8°C and rain) and even more to a tip-top repaired Hector.
