Routiniert stehen wir um kurz nach 6 auf dem Dach und heißen den Tag willkommen. Wir frösteln in der frischen Morgenluft, und doch wollen wir nirgendwo sonst sein als hier, inmitten der eigenwilligen Felslandschaften und dem Tal der Heißluftballons.

Our morning routine starts around 6 a.m., welcoming the day and the umpteen balloons around our heads.

Heute haben wir erstaunlich wenig vor: einen Ausflug zum Göreme Freilicht-Museum und ausgiebig durch den Ort bummeln. Zum Abend dann Sunset View Point und ein letztes Mal köstlich türkisch dinieren, schließlich ist das hier neben all der Action ein Genuss-Urlaub.

A lazy day lies ahead of us: apart from a walk to the Göreme Open Air Museum, there is not much to do. We will have plenty of time for a bit of shopping and much of the sunset, all accompanied by delicious food and wine. Another wonderful day in Cappadocia, that is.

Nach dem ausgiebigen Frühstück laufen wir in Richtung Open Air Museum, das nur 15 Minuten entfernt liegt. Wir brauchen locker 30 Minuten, weil wir an der Ranch mit diesem süßen Esel-Baby vorbeikommen. Am liebsten würde ich den kleinen Kerl knuddeln und einpacken, aber aus Respekt (vor den Besitzern, der Esels-Mutter, …) halten wir etwas Abstand und verzichten auf das Übergepäck.

After breakfast, we make our way towards the museum with only 15 minutes of walking distance. We manage to stretch it to a full half hour due to the cute donkey baby on the ranch along the way. I wonder if this tiny white plush toy feels like it looks, while in fact we keep some distance – always respecting other animate beings (including the protective donkey mom).

Nicht nur die Esel, auch die Pferde gefallen uns. Der Profi sagt: gutes Sozialverhalten, glänzendes Fell, bestes Heu – hier könnte man ohne Bedenken einen Ausritt buchen.

The horses kept on the ranch confirm the positive impression: from what my travel-buddy-expert says, they show a decent and relaxed comportment and are well-fed. Looks like you could book a horse-ride without second thoughts about kharma.

Kurz vor 10 Uhr sind wir am Freilichtmuseum und kommen gerade recht, um noch vor der 40-köpfigen italienischen Reisegruppe die Karanlık-Kirche zu betreten.

A bit later, we arrive just in time at the Karanlık church: we manage to sneak in just before the lights are switched on, ahead of the first 40-headed-group of the day.

Kaum schaltet der Türsteher das Licht ein, schon sind wir hingerissen: wunderschöne Fresken ziehen sich über die Wände und Säulen bis über die Decke. Restauratoren arbeiten ruhig und konzentriert vor sich hin, und wir können nur erahnen, wie es in voller Pracht aussehen wird. Aufgrund des Alters der Farben und der Enge in den Gebäuden des Open Air Museums ist Fotografieren fast überall verboten, was wir natürlich respektieren. Ein paar Eindrücke (von außen aufgenommen oder dort, wo es zulässig ist) finden sich hier im Blog, aber grundsätzlich gilt: Selbst sehen übertrifft jede Kopie.

This is our first church with more than tiny leftovers of the original decoration. A group of restorers works silently on the ancient paintings, and we can only imagine how magnificent it might look in the near future. Due to the aging colours and the narrow buildings, it is not allowed to take pictures in most of the churches. Any glimpses shown in this blog have been enabled either from a distance or based on respectful acceptance of the given options.

Der eigentliche Zugang zum Museum ist oberhalb dieser ersten Kirche, wo wir den stattlichen Eintritt sowie einen Audio Guide bezahlen. Angesichts der Preise darf man sich fragen: Lohnt sich das Freilicht-Museum?

The main entrance to the museum area is located slightly apart from the first church. We pay the entrance fee plus one audio guide, knowing that the prices are not cheap, but will enable conservation of cultural heritage. Still, it might be fair to ask: is the Open Air Museum worth a visit?

Ja, aus folgenden Gründen: Während die meisten frei zugänglichen Kirchen im Inneren weitgehend zerstört sind, wird hier inzwischen restauriert – also bewahrt und wiederhergestellt. Außerdem gibt es hier etliche historische Höhlen-Reste aus frühen christlichen Epochen auf kleinstem Raum zu sehen.

We daresay „Yes”, as it offers much more than other ancient churches we have seen so far. While destruction of Christian decorations have merely left the architectural layout in most of the places, here you will see a lot of frescos from anything between 4^th and 19^th century. Furthermore, you will hardly find a more condensed accumulation of cave churches.

Angesichts der geschichtlichen Bedeutung gehört es für uns einfach zum Besuch Kappadokiens dazu. Die Vielfalt der hier gezeigten Malereien und Strukturen ist enorm – von kindlich anmutender Krakelei bis zu irrsinnig schönen Fresken ist alles dabei. Kein Wunder, denn es gilt als eines der bedeutendsten religiösen Zentren des frühen Christentums, waren hier doch bereits seit dem 4. Jahrhundert Mönche angesiedelt, die Kirchen, Klöster und Kapellen in den weichen vulkanischen Felsen schnitzten.

For long eras, Christian monks have carved cloisters, churches and chapels in the soft volcanic rocks, making this place one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anatolia. Besides the landscape and underground-cities, those cultural developments are part of what Cappadocia offers – hence, we are glad to visit the museum despite prices and crowds.  

Andererseits ist es spätestens ab Mittag gnadenlos überfüllt und etliche Besucher verhalten sich respektlos und sind peinlich bis nervtötend. Man könnte das alles besser organisieren, aber lassen wir der Anlage doch ihren rudimentären Charme – schließlich stammen viele der kirchlichen Überbleibsel aus Zeiten, in denen das Leben hart und einfach war.

Speaking of crowds: Tourists from any corner of the world come with all kinds of manners. I am flabbergasted how loud, respectless and stubborn people can be… Perhaps the museum will find a better way of managing the mass of visitors, but for the time being I can only recommend to come here early in the morning. You literally need to see through the crowds and work on your inner tranquility…

Auch wenn man es dem Gelände auf den ersten Blick nicht ansieht: Das Museum wurde aufgrund seiner inneren Schönheiten 1985 in die UNESCO-Welterbeliste aufgenommen und gilt sowohl als historischer als auch architektonischer Fund. Die Fresken, die Szenen aus der Bibel darstellen, in die Felsen geschnitzt, bieten einen einzigartigen Einblick in die christliche Geschichte. Unsere persönliche Geschichte schließen wir ab mit der erfolgreichen Rückgabe des Audio Guides (war ne kleine Hängepartie), und überlassen das Areal den internationalen Massen.

The area of the museum looks far from extraordinary, but due to the cave monuments, it is part of the UNESCO-world heritage list since 1985. We have been impressed by the variety of caves, sketches and paintings, eras and styles. We are satisfied with our visit, especially after the successful exchange of audio guide / passport (good kharma eventually pays off).

Zum Abend steigen wir auf zum Sunset-Point oberhalb unseres Hotels. Im Osten schwebt wie eine Fata Morgana der Erciyes mit seinen 3.916m am Horizont.

In late afternoon, we climb the steep roads up to the nearest sunset point. Far to the East, the peak of Erciyes (3.916m) seems to float behind the nearer mountains like a fata morgana.

Im Norden liegt das Plateau, vor dem sich Rose Valley und Sword Valley erstrecken. Gestern erst sind wir bis dort hinten gelaufen, was die Felsen irgendwie persönlicher macht.

Turning to the North, we look to the “Grand Canyon”-look-alike plateau with Rose Valley and Sword Valley at its feet. Merely one day ago, we have been there, hiking through this crazy landscape, making the panoramic view a bit more personal.  

Als die Sonne langsam unter den Horizont fällt, wird das Leuchten der Fels-Farbtöne intensiver. Kein Wunder, dass hier morgens und abends einiges los ist – gerade genug, um immer jemanden zu finden, der als Fotograf einspringt.

When the sun approaches the horizon, it intensifies the colours of the rocks just as ordered. Every day, some dozens of tourists come up, attracted by the beauty of sunrise and sunset. Luckily, other than today’s museum, it is far from crowded, but offers a range of possible hobby photographers.

Romy und ich sind seit genau einer Woche unterwegs und beglückwünschen uns immer noch, dass wir diese tolle Reise zusammen machen. Wir spielen noch ein bisschen mit dem Setting, schließlich reisen wir morgen ab und wollen noch ein paar bildhafte Erinnerungen sammeln.

Our common journey (in Turkey) has started exactly one week ago, and still Romy and me congratulate ourselves for being here. I cannot resist to try some more pictures (walking on the edge and such), following my fondness for cliffs and ridges.

Schließlich versinkt die Sonne und beschert der Landschaft einen letzten großen Auftritt. Zeit, sich auf den nächsten Programmpunkt zu freuen!

Eventually, the sun drops down, doing its best to present the surroundings in a fulminant light.

Keine zehn Minuten später sitzen wir auf der Dachterrasse des heutigen Restaurants und genießen den Blick auf Fels und Zipfelmützen vor nachtblauem Himmel.

Not before long, we take our seats on the rooftop terrace of our choice, soaking in the bizarre rocky forms with the dark blue skies.

Nach dem Essen gönnen wir uns noch einen kappadokischen Rotwein – sozusagen ein türkischer Bordeaux, zumindest schmeckt er so. Während die Nachtluft abkühlt, sitzen wir halb in einer alten Küchen-Höhle, halb im Freien.

Our dinner ends with a glass of best Cappadocian wine in a half-open cave (a former kitchen, as the sooty walls tell us).

Zum Glück ist das noch nicht das Ende Kappadokiens – ein letztes Puzzle-Teil fehlt noch, und außerdem ist diese Gegend so vielfältig, dass ich noch nicht loslassen mag. Zudem wäre da noch der Ursprung des Namens und was die Perser damit zu tun haben…

As night will be followed by daylight, there still is more to come. Last but not least, we should unveil the origin of the name Cappadocia and how the Persians are involved…
