Hasta Luego! passt noch besser. So langsam ist es Hector nämlich leid, immer nur in der Kälte zu stehen und aufs Frühjahr zu warten. Dabei waren wir doch gerade noch im sonnigen Herbst in Südtirol unterwegs?! Doch dazu später mehr…

Hasta Luego! is even more accurate. Hector is tired of winter and cold, all lazy and bored. Even our recent trip to South Tyrol is more than three months away…  

Der Januar ist nicht nur kalt, sondern auch arbeitsreich. Umso willkommener ist die Urlaubsplanung an den nicht-Büro-Tagen. In weniger als zwei Sonntagen sammeln sich 42 Klebe-Fähnchen im Reiseführer an. Vielleicht sollte ich auswandern, Vanlifer werden oder reich heiraten? Anders wird es wohl nicht gehen…

January is, as usual, a high-level working  month. I use the rare free days sketching the next travel: it only takes hours until 42 tape flags mark my destinations of choice. Guess I should re-think my options: Full-time vanlife? Find a rich man for marriage?? Otherwise, I might need to cut down on my plans…

Das Timing kläre ich später, zunächst fahre ich die Route virtuell ab. Alle 30 Minuten ist es schon wieder so schön, dass man ein paar Tage bleiben könnte – so komme nirgendwo an, aber darum geht es ja auch nicht.

Ich schockiere meine Freundin mit dem Umkehrpunkt = der Grenze zu Portugal. Offensichtlich ist ganz Portugal wunderschön, sonnig und warm, während der Rest Europas ein eher fraglicher Bereich ist. Mein innerer Rebell ist sofort begeistert und es steht fest: Hector und ich fahren nach Nordspanien!

I decide to postpone the timing decision to the future, positive that it will sort itself out anyway. The virtual trip along the flagged spots reveals that I could find a new routine: Get behind the wheel, hit the road for approximately 30 minutes, reach the next spot and settle down. Looks like we will never reach anywhere soon.

When I tell a friend about my plans, she is literally shocked when I point out that the border to Portugal marks my turning point. Obviously, Portugal is entirely warm, sunny and stunning beautiful, while any other region (especially Northern) must be a bad choice. Immediately, my inner rebel kicks in and it now is set: Hector and me will go to Northern Spain!

Baskenland, Kantabrien, Asturien, Galizien – und jede Menge Strände noch dazu. Ich werde Regensachen mitnehmen und das Surfboard, Sommerklamotten und eine Wolldecke für kalte Nächte, dazu Wanderschuhe und mein Spanischbuch. Neben all dem offline-Equipment zieht eventuell die Moderne ein: Mit einem mobilen WLAN-Router könnte ich Fernsehen statt Sonnenuntergänge bewundern, ich könnte Doomscrollen statt Literatur-Genuss, Spotify statt Ukulele. Oder ich nutze es zur verbesserten Planung der nächsten Strecken-Etappe: online-Tickets für Höhlenführungen, Campingplatz-Suche und Tiden-Informationen. Ja, das macht mehr Sinn. Den Rest der Zeit werde ich die technologischen Möglichkeiten einfach ignorieren und lande dann doch wieder mit der Ukulele am Strand. Schließlich bin ich kein Workation-Vanlifer, sondern genieße meine Reisen mit Urlaub und Freizeit.

Pais Vasco, Cantabria, Asturia and Galicia – plus umpteen beaches, bays and cliffs. Equipment will be best containing rain jacket, hiking shoes, surf board, summer clothing and a woollen plaid for cold nights. Furthermore, I might lead my 20-year-old van into modern times, adding a mobile WLAN-router to the list. While others use up precious time for doom-scrolling, online music or TV series, I will rather focus on easy access to online-tickets for touristic highlights and the research of campsites. It might be outmoded, but I rather spend my travel-time outdoors or with good books rather than online behind a screen. Instead of workation, I rather choose vacation during my trips.
