Travelhector

Hector sagt, er kann beides: Reisen und verweilen, sich umschauen und nach innen blicken, und sogar in der Ruhe aktiv sein. Kurz: Hector kann alles. Mit diesem Vorbild zögere ich nicht, mich ebenfalls maximal flexibel zu geben. Ich will einerseits beizeiten aufbrechen, andererseits ist die Arbeit an dem ein oder anderen Thema noch nicht fertig. Die Prüfung der technischen Voraussetzungen ergibt: es braucht dafür kein besonderes Equipment und keinen technischen Schnickschnack, nur die Couch muss vorrübergehend dran glauben…

Hector claims, he can do both: travel or stay, look around and focus on the inside, even be active within the calm. With such a role model, I am eager to be as flexible as possible, solving nonchalantly the timing conflict. Hence, I am wiling to align an early departure with work requirements. The only visible sacrifice is the conversion of Hector’s couch.

Alles easy, denke ich mir, Basis der Couch ist schließlich der Tisch – und der lässt sich auf zwei Höhen einhängen. Irgendwo liegt noch das dafür notwendige Tischbein, das sich auf zwei Höhen abknicken bzw. ausstrecken lässt. Kurze Suche im Keller, und da ist es. Tischbein: check.

The sofa is based on the lowered table, so all I need to do is build it back into the classical dinette with two benches and a table. I am sure to have stored the table’s flex-foot in my basement… Minutes later, I confirm: table leg: check.

Ich schnappe mir eine Handvoll Sammelsurium-Schrauben, dazu den kleinen Schraubenzieher und los geht’s. Bis ich mich beim Blick auf die Wandhalterung frage: wo ist eigentlich die Leiste, an die man den Tisch einhängt??

I am good to go, until I realize: the attachment base on the side wall is missing. Slowly, it dawns on me: we had to replace the original pieces by another product, which has never been used so far, but must be stuck in the depth of my basement…

Nach einer weiteren Runde Keller-Hausdurchsuchung finde ich die Leiste. Ist ein nachgekauftes Ersatzteil, da die alte Befestigung nicht mehr vollständig erhalten war. Jetzt wird sich zeigen, ob die Höhe stimmt und das System funktioniert.

Eventually, I find the ridge and get on with the functional test. Most probably, the screws in the wall are mounted on the exact height for an even table.

Mein Schraubenzieher bringt mich hier nicht weiter, es braucht Spezialwerkzeug für die Schrauben. Bin nur froh, dass ich sämtliche Spezialschrauben in der Wand belassen habe, weiß ich wenigstens, wo die sind… Ich erwerbe einen Satz Spezialdings und suche als nächstes den Akkuschrauber. Ob der wohl geladen ist??

Another interruption is on it’s way when I realize that the screws for the ridge do not match any of my screwdrivers. The required toolkit comes with 7,99€, marking the minimum cashback I need to achieve with my work. Now let’s see if the cordless screwdriver is charged.

Endlich Action: Schrauben aus der Wand holen: check. Leiste dazu: check. Wie rum man die wohl anbringen muss? Wird sich finden…

Within the blink of an eye, everything works out: turn out the screws: check.  Attachment ridge: check. With a 50/50 evaluation of upside/downside of the ridge, I am just seconds away from a perfect coworking space.

Jetzt noch das Tischbein – irgendwelche Schrauben werden schon passen…

Last detail is a bundle of leftover-screws, that will or will not fix the table leg…

Schließlich der große Moment: Tisch einhängen, aufstellen, schweben lassen. Bin nur nicht sicher, ob das im Sinne des Erfinders ist…

When all is set and done, I look proudly at the result of a floating table. Wait… floating? In the air, without using the leg??

Am Ende ruckelt sich alles zurecht: richtig positioniert steht der Tisch fest auf dem Boden. Die kurzen, seitlich montierten Tischbeine bleiben zunächst dran, sie rahmen im Sofa-Betrieb die Fahrradgarage ein und erhöhen während der Fahrt die Stabilität.

With some fine-tuning, the table is placed on the long leg, solid as it can be. The short legs at the sides will challenge my yoga abilities when sitting down on the benches – yet, they are helpful when framing the bike-garage and supporting the whole construction (especially in driving hours).

Wenn ich dann im Echt-Betrieb die Polster noch final sortiere, habe ich einen 1a-Arbeitsplatz. Also: vor oder nach dem Treffen mit meinem Surf-Buddy. Schließlich darf man die Prioritäten der Reise nicht aus dem Blick verlieren!

Later, I will sort out the cushions in the most suitable way, creating a comfortable office surrounding. This will help to accelerate work, with maximum outcome in limited time. I am confident that ¾ days will be fine, leaving enough time for surfing with friends. I might end up working in my wetsuit for insulation reasons, with the windfall-profit of quick changes between work and waves.
