Hector muss sich noch ein wenig gedulden, erst mal ist Winter. 10°C (plus), recycelter Kunstschnee, das volle Programm.

Hector has to be patient – winter is still present, currently with 10°C (+) and recycelt artificial snow.

Leben auf der Hütte bedeutet: Erholung pur. Unerreichbar, ohne Computer, ohne Nachtleben (sofern man nicht mit dem Hüttenwirt versumpft). Schad is schoo, dass der Schnee heuer recht schlecht ist, aber das lässt sich mit viel Ruhe und gutem Essen überkompensieren.

Life at the hut = inaccessible, free of computers and far from nightlife (as long as you avoid Schnaps with the host). All this is pure relaxation. It still is a shame that the snow is pretty poor, but we manage to overcompensate it with delicious food.

Der erste Tag gehört der Kandahar: lang, steil und nie langweilig. Jede Abfahrt ist Vorbereitung für die darauffolgende, wir nennen es Training on the Job.

First day is dedicated to the famous Kandahar slope. Each run is preparation for the next one, we call it training on the job.

Jeder Tag endet in vollendeter Schönheit. Ob man sich daran je satt-sieht, wenn man dauerhaft hier oben lebt?

Neuer Tag, neues Eis. Endlich Weltcup-Bedingungen! denken wir, und probieren dann doch noch andere Pisten aus.

New day, new challenge: The icy slope is worth a worldcup team, so we do our very best. However, it is time to have fun on the other slopes around before it all turns into water.

Heute gibt es nur Eis und Sulz – es wird nicht unser längster Skitag.

Today’s choice is either ice or muddy leftovers, nothing in between. Not our longest ski day.

Dienstag ist Skitour-Tag! Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissen wir noch nicht, dass der Tourengeher-Abend gestrichen wurde. Uns fehlt also am Abend das Publikum, vor dem wir mit unserer Abenteuer-Tour angeben können. Genau genommen wissen wir zu Beginn nicht einmal, dass es eine Abenteuer-Tour wird.

Tuesday is skitour-day! At this point, we are unaware of the cancelled skitour-evening, leading to a lack of audience for our adventure stories. In fact, we do not even know that our tour will turn into an adventure…

Angeblich werden die Touren-Wege regelmäßig auf Vordermann gebracht – bestätigen können wir jedoch nur jede Menge überfrorene Serpentinen, die unsere Felle an ihr Haftungs-Limit bringen. Und darüber hinaus.

Rumours say, that the touring paths are maintained regularly. Our reality check reveals endless layers of ice on the steep serpentine section… The loss of grip becomes a painful experience, not meeting our expectation of a picturesque hobby.

Am Ende bewältigen wir alle Widrigkeiten und prüfen die Hochalm auf kulinarische Qualität. Sie liegt ungefähr auf dem Niveau der diesjährigen Schneeverhältnisse, ist aber mal eine Abwechslung von der täglichen Verwöhnkultur “unserer” Hütte.

In the end, we overcome all adversity and test the Hochalm for culinary quality. It is roughly on a par with this year’s snow conditions, but is a change from the delicacies at “our” hut.

Am Abend rufen wir der Pistenraupe zu, dass sie es für morgen ruhig angehen lassen kann, wir haben nämlich andere Pläne.

Later, we tell the snow groomer to take it slow: Tomorrow, we will change the scenery, aiming for higher levels..

Am nächsten Morgen stehen wir um kurz vor 8 schon in der Bindung. So schön es ist, das Skigebiet ganz für uns zu haben, diesmal ist das Ziel der Bahnhof: Um 8:24h entern wir den Zug zur Zugspitze.

We start early, all up for the 8:24h train to the Zugspitze. Breakfast is best along the way, as the rack railroad takes >1 hour for the ascent.

Das Zugspitzplatt empfängt uns mit eisigem Wind, viel wichtiger ist jedoch: 100% der Lifte sind in Betrieb, das gleiche gilt für die Pisten und alles ist bedeckt mit echtem Schnee.

Despite the chilly wind, all lifts and slopes are up and running, accompanied by real snow beneath our skis.

Mitten in der Woche sind wenig Leute unterwegs, zudem haben wir auffallend häufig sympathische Mitfahrer im Lift. Und dazu dieser Schnee… Endlich ein Bilderbuch-Skitag!

In the middle of the week, the slopes are far from crowded. Even better, we have a conspicuous number of friendly passengers on the lifts (all week, already). And then, there is this snow… Finally a picture-book ski day!

Am Ende war es wie immer: anspruchsvoll, erholsam, abenteuerlich und wunderschön.

After all, it has been challenging, relaxing, adventurous and fabulous!
