Nicht nur dem Winter geht die Kraft aus, auch Hector ist seit Wochen schlapp und ohne Energie. Selbst der gute Ökostrom hilft nur noch bedingt, es wird dringend Zeit für Frühjahr und Ferien!

It’s not just winter that’s running out of steam, Hector has also been weak for weeks. Even the green electricity only helps to a limited extent, as my van has been starving for spring and vacations far too long.

Natürlich habe ich längst einen Plan: Frankreich, Westküste. Gern mit einem Abstecher nach Spanien und einem Umweg über die Côte d’Azur, dazu den Rückweg durch das Jura. Kaum habe ich alles ausgearbeitet, beeinflussen externe Faktoren das Timing – also füge ich der Planung mehr Spanien und die Option auf Portugal hinzu, addiere im Geiste zwei bis drei Tausend extra-Kilometer und bemühe mich um Flexibilität.

Of course, I’ve long had a plan: France, west coast. With a toe into Spanish waves and a detour to the Côte d’Azur, plus the way back through Jura/France. Once I have it all worked out, my plan is blown by external factors. Consequently, I will look for Spain/South + Portugal road books, add two or three thousand extra kilometers and claim to be flexible as hell.

In der Zwischenzeit überlege ich, was ich an Hector noch optimieren könnte: ein seitlicher Klapptisch an der Couch? Quadratmeter-weise Insektenschutz an der Schiebetür? Oder die Suche nach einem Ersatzteil für die Kederschiene/Tisch-Einhängung? Am Ende wird es der profane „Umbau“ der Chemie-Toi in eine Trenn-Toilette. Ich erspare euch die Fotos.

In the meantime, I wonder what else I could optimize in my van: a folding couch-table? Square meters of insect screen on the sliding door? Look for the replacement for the piping rail/table suspension? In the end, it will be the mundane “conversion” of the chemical toilet into a separating toilet. I spare you the photos.

Stattdessen blicke ich zurück auf Hectors Heck. Ganz hinten, oberhalb des Gaskastens, war ursprünglich ein Mülleimer vorgesehen. Abnehmbare Holzscheibe oben, Einfassung aus Pressspan unten. Als ob ein 10-Liter-Mülleimer nicht die Krönung der Platzverschwendung in einem fünfeinhalb-Meter-Bus wären.

Instead, I look back: At the very back of Hector’s kitchen, above the gas tank, a waste garbage can was foreseen (original ADRIA layout). Removable wooden disk at the top, pressboard surround at the bottom. As if a 10-liter garbage can wasn’t the ultimate waste of space in a five-and-a-half-metre bus.

Es folgte der Umbau in vollendeter Schreiner-Kunst: die Einfassung für den Eimer fliegt raus, stattdessen verschraube ich Holzstückchen als Rüttelkante. Und schon habe ich ein Vorratsfach, das sich mit geöffneter Hecktür genauso beladen lässt wie von oben durch die Küche.

Lucky me that I’ve got talent in carpentry: I have removed the surround for the bucket and fixed wood-pieces to the edge instead. Now I have a storage compartment that can be loaded easily by the rear door as well as from the kitchen above.

Bei aller Flexibilität (wann, wohin…), eins ist sicher: meine 30 x 50 cm Speisekammer wird mich bis ans Meer bringen!

Sure enough, I will survive on my way to the coast, thanks to my built-in pantry!
