Über die Hälfte einer Reise entsteht zufällig: Aus der passenden Entfernung zwischen zwei Punkten entstehen neue Ziele, Empfehlungen anderer Camper wecken meine Neugier und dann höre ich, dass der Hafen von Cassis schön sein soll. Am besten, mit einem Glas Wein in der Hand und der Sonne tief über dem Meer.

Half of a trip develops by chance: based on a random point between two destinations, driven by recommendations or due to a friend, telling me about Cassis being the right place for a glass of wine.

Am Rand von Cassis liegt Camping des Cigales, meist als sehr einfach, wenig-empfehlenswert kommentiert. Umso mehr bin ich positiv überrascht: Auch wenn die Sanitär-Anlagen fast schon historischen Wert haben – sie werden 2x täglich gereinigt, die Bepflanzung ist top gepflegt und die fehlende Reservierungs-Möglichkeit ist eher Bonus als Nachteil.

At the edge of Cassis lies Camping des Cigales, often commented as very (very) basic. To me, it comes as positive surprise: the sanitary facilities may be old (almost historic), yet they are cleaned thoroughly twice a day. Light plants among the pitches are well-maintained and the refusal of reservations may be more of a bonus than anything else.

Direkt vom Campingplatz aus fährt ein Linienbus nach links in Richtung Marseille oder nach rechts zum Hafen von Cassis. Wer sich für sportlich hält, läuft natürlich – hin (bergab) wie zurück (bergauf, sehr ordentlich bergauf).

A regular bus brings you either to Marseille or to Cassis downtown. The latter being true in the most literal way, as the harbour does not only mark the centre, but is located down at sea level.

Im Hafenbecken tummeln sich Fischerboote und kleine Touristen-Schipper, dazwischen liegen private Segelyachten und Motorboote. Ich bin sehr zufrieden, dass ich der freundschaftlichen Empfehlung gefolgt bin. Das Fischrestaurant ist zwar eher teuer als gut, aber der Ort selbst, der Sonnenuntergang und das Mittelmeer-Feeling machen das mehr als wett.

The docks are full of small boats and yachts, more for the joy than for ostentation. While sipping my wine, I am happy to have followed the friend’s tip. The fish restaurant turns out to have higher prices than taste, yet the all-over setting is pretty nice. Cassis, sunset and the summer vibes down to the sea prove the qualities of the Côte d’Azur.

Tagsüber ist es hier sicher heiß und voll, aber die abendliche Stimmung ist wundervoll. Und doch: für heute lasse ich die kleinen Strände und Hafen-Buchten hinter mir. Der Anstieg zum Campingplatz trainiert und macht wohlig-müde – beste Vorbereitung für den kommenden Tag!

I assume summer days hot and crowded, while evenings are peaceful and relaxed. I soak in the atmosphere before I turn back to Hector. The steep way up to the campsite makes me tired and well-trained, both suiting tomorrow’s plans perfectly well.
