Je älter man wird, umso gelassener können wir werden. Schließlich wächst jedes Jahr der Erfahrungsschatz: Angesichts der Hilfsbereitschaft, die wir oft erleben dürfen, gilt: was auch passiert, es werden sich Lösungen finden. Auch und erst recht unterwegs.

Mit Hector ist das so ähnlich, nur anders herum: Mit seinen 18 ½ Jahren treten gelegentlich unspezifische Störungen auf, und nicht immer bin ich mir ganz sicher, ob wir am Ziel ankommen. Das führt zu einem Hauch von Abenteuer, je näher der nächste Aufbruch kommt.

The older we get, the more relaxed we can be. With a well-grown wealth of experience , we have witnessed an enormous willingness to support others, be it friends or foreigners. Thus, I fancy that solutions will be found for any issue that may arise. Even and especially on the road.

In recent times, Hector has developed a bit of an attitude for unspecific malfunctions. I am mostly sure that we will reach any destination with the utmost certainty, yet some irritations along the way add a bit of adventurous spice to our travels.

Zuletzt war da die Batterie-Warnleuchte im Cockpit, die häufig an und dazwischen wieder aus ging, jeder Wechsel begleitet von Klack-Geräuschen an der Elektrozentrale. Irgendwann verschwand das Problem wieder, zwei Werkstätten kommentieren das mit: „Lichtmaschine? Im Moment funktioniert sie.“, und: „Am Trenn-Relais ist kein Verschleiß zu finden, aber wenn es noch mal auftritt, wackeln Sie an diesem Strang“. Sprach’s und zeigte auf irgendwo hinten-unten im Kabel-Dickicht.

Most recently, the battery warning light came up in the cockpit, turning on and off, accompanied by clicking noises at the electrical center. At some point, the problem disappeared, leaving me in a vague status of discomfort. Two garages consulted came up with: “Alternator? At the moment, it works just fine, nothing to do.”, and: “There’s no wear on the cut-off relay, but if it occurs again, wiggle this wire”. With this being said, the most experienced guy points to somewhere at the rear bottom in the thicket of cables.

Auf Verdacht gab’s eine neue Batterie. Und für alle Fälle merke ich mir schon mal: Lichtmaschine heißt auf französisch „le dynamo d’éclairage“ oder auch „la génératrice“ (alternativ: l’alternateur). Die Botschaft ans Universum lautet: es ist total okay, wenn manche Vokabeln ohne praktische Anwendung bleiben.

On suspicion, I paid for a brand-new battery. And, just in case, I look up that the French word for alternator is “le dynamo d’éclairage” or “la génératrice. Of course, message to the universe is: I am totally fine with useless vocabulary that I will never need.

Immerhin einen Fehler konnte Werkstatt No. 1 identifizieren: den abgerissenen Schlauch vom Grauwassertank. Beheben soll ich das selbst, ich liebe Herausforderungen. Ich kaufe im Baumarkt einen Schlauch, der vielleicht oder vielleicht auch nicht passt, dazu zwei Schlauchschellen. Wenn das klappt, bewerbe ich mich doch noch auf einen Ausbildungsplatz im Handwerk. Erster Lösungsschritt: Das Zubehör geht an Bord und wartet auf passende Gelegenheit.

At least, the first garage was able to identify one defect: the torn hose from the gray-water tank. I am supposed to fix it myself, knowing how much I love a good challenge. At the DIY store around the corner, I buy a hose that may or may not fit, plus two hose clamps. If that works, I will apply for a handcrafts apprenticeship after all. First step: I store the accessories on board and wait for a suitable opportunity along the way.

Dann wäre da noch der Tisch der Dinette, umgebaut zur Fahrrad-Garage und Mittelteil des Lounge-Sofas. Er hängt an der Seitenwand, über 3×17 cm ordentlich verzahnt mit der Kederschiene. Zwei der drei Zahn-Einhängungen sind über die Nutzungszeit abgebrochen, gleichzeitig habe ich mein maximales Wintergewicht erreicht. Es bleibt spannend, wann das Sofa unter mir zusammenbricht.

Then we have the dinette table, converted into a bicycle garage and the middle section of the lounge sofa. It hangs on the side wall, neatly interlocked with a piping rail over 3×17 cm. Two of the three tooth mountings have broken off by now, while at the same time I have reached maximum winter weight. It will be interesting to see when the sofa collapses under me.

Recherche sowie mehrere Hersteller- und Service-Anfragen ergeben, dass es hierfür keine Ersatzteile mehr gibt. Alternativ existieren neuere Modelle von Wand- und Tisch-Schienen, für die ich die intakte Halterung aus der Fahrzeugwand schrauben müsste. Noch schüchtert mich das ein (wie auch die fehlenden Befestigungspunkte oder Schrauben), aber ich denke, bei akutem Bedarf kann ich mich der Reparatur stellen. Für rd. 21,- EUR wandern die neuen Schienen in die „Zeugs-Kiste“, außerdem lade ich vor Abfahrt den Akkuschrauber auf, was soll da noch schief gehen?!

Research reveals that the spare parts are no longer available. Alternatively, there are newer models of wall and table rails, for which I would have to unscrew the intact bracket from the vehicle wall. Being a bit hesitant on this behalf (same is true for the lack of fixing points or screws), yet I think I can face a proper repair upon necessity. For roughly 21,- EUR, the new rails join the hose in the “whatever stuff box”. With my cordless screwdriver charged, I definitely feel like a pro, prepared as hell.

In wenigen Wochen beginnt unser diesjähriges Abenteuer. Bis dahin stehen noch einige Vorbereitungen an, während die Vorfreude täglich zulegt.

I am looking forward to getting the adventure started. Until then, weeks will pass by and preparation tasks will be crossed off my list – while anticipation rises day by day.
