Sonntag, schon vom Balkon aus sehe ich Wellen in genau meiner Größe. Gestern Nachmittag bin ich am Waikiki Beach auf zwei Surfschulen gestoßen: eine reguläre mit Standard Softboards und auf einen leicht verlebten Rapper namens Sterling, mit einem Sammelsurium unterschiedlicher Boards. Nach einem kurzen Blick auf die Schlange wartender Erst-Surfer und die ausgehängte Preisliste der Surfschule ist die Sache klar: ich wende mich an Sterling.

Sunday morning brings up gentle waves in the Pacific. Waikiki Beach offers standard surf schools with beginners’ softboards – and there is Sterling. He is a rapper, a surfer, and by the look at some details I tend to say that he has not always led a healthy lifestyle. When looking at the beginners-line up and the price lists to the right, I decide to turn left and go for Sterling with his choice of used surfboards.

Ich bekomme ein super Surfboard: Fiberglas (mein erstes nicht-Foamie!!), 9.2 Fuß lang, schmal und wendig. Schnell wird klar, dass mein heutiger Surflehrer ein Lebenskünstler sein mag, aber Surfen und das Überleben seiner Schüler nimmt er ernst. Aufgeregt bin ich trotzdem: Neues Gewässer, neue Wellen, neues Board – ob das gut geht?

Schnell bekomme ich Routine darin: Diagonal rauspaddeln, in die entgegenkommenden Wellen eintauchen, weiter draußen Brett drehen und Ready for Take-Off: Blick zum Strand, mit aller Kraft paddeln. Sobald einen die Welle anhebt, noch 2-3 Kraulzüge mehr, dann schnell auf die Füße. Der laute Jubelschrei lässt alle wissen, dass ich gerade meine erste Welle im Pazifik reite.

My surfteacher gives me a wonderful board: light fiberglass (no foamy anymore!), 9.2 feet, slim and handy. This Sterling guy may lead an alternative way of life, still he is very serious when it is about surfing and the survival of his pupils. Given the new surrounding and unusual board, I am more than happy that I chose him for today’s first surf in the Pacific.

Soon enough, routine kicks in: paddling out diagonally, turning, chosing a wave. Look towards the beach, pick up speed by paddling with all forces, do 2-3 more strokes once the wave lifts you up and then enjoy the ride. A loud hurray tells the beach that I got my first wave successfully.

Auf einmal macht alles Sinn: der Urlaub, die Reise, sogar die vielen Menschen gehen in Ordnung. Hunderttausende, die ich anlächeln kann, während ich durch den Tag schwebe.

Später am Nachmittag packe ich meine Ukulele und ein illegales Glas Weißwein und finde eine schattige Bank im Kuhio Beach Park. Hier ist es entspannt, nahezu leer. Die Ukulele singt und nebenbei ergibt sich eine angeregte Unterhaltung mit dem Paar an der nächsten Picknick-Bank. Die beiden leben seit einigen Jahren auf Oahu und geben mir wertvolle Tipps für gute Restaurants. Surf, sing and glow ist das passende Motto für Hawaii!

I spend the afternoon with my ukulele and an illegal glass of wine at Kuhio Beach Park. Only a half mile away from Waikiki Beach area, it enables a calm and relaxed time. Out of the blue, I happen to find myself in a vivid conversation with to a lovely couple seated at another pair of picknick chairs. I receive precious recommendations for local restaurants and, even better, have a bit of an exchange. About Hawaii and the other states, about life and all the rest.

It turns out that best I can do on Hawaii is Surf, Sing and Glow.
