Natürlich gilt mein erster Blick dem Pazifik: spiegelglatt an der Bucht vor meinem Apartment. Nächster Stop: Küste auf Höhe der Kihei Surf Schools. Es gibt im flachen Wasser minimale Kräuselungen, auf denen die Surf-Teacher ihren Neuling-Boards einen Schubs geben, damit sie sicher aufstehen und balancieren können. Sie nennen es Surfkurs.

First look is at the Pacific: flat as a lake. But perhaps there is more of a swell down where the surf schools are? Well… The water is a bit unsteady and teachers give their pupils’ boards a little push, making them stand up and find their balance. They call it surfing 1.01.

So wird das nichts, besser ich suche mir ein neues Hobby. In Ergänzung zu meinem Schnorchel besorge ich mir ein paar Flossen und fahre zur Küste südlich von Lahaina. Der Strand zieht sich über Meilen entlang der Straße – es gibt keinen Service, nur ein paar verstreute Obdachlose, die sich weiter südlich angesammelt haben. Familien, Einheimische, Kanufahrer, Schnorchler, sie alle genießen hier endlosen Sandstrand mit Baumschatten.

I decide to go for other hobbies. Adding some fins to my snorkel, I choose the long, sandy coastline south of Lahaina. There is not so much as a service, the only remarkable topic might be the homeless that settled down further south. Still, it is a good spot for families, canoe clubs and snorkelers, all enjoying the endless beach with natural shadow.

Es ist Jahre her, dass ich zuletzt (überhaupt) Schnorcheln war. Zuerst bekomme ich Wasser in die Nase und brauche etwas Eingewöhnung, aber dann ist alles easy. Ein paar hübsche Fische sind hier unterwegs und es macht Spaß, im Wasser umherzutreiben. Aufgrund der flachen Riffs sind viele Strände Mauis nicht gut zum Schwimmen geeignet. Es wird sich noch herausstellen, dass es viele Strände gibt, die nur für eine Sache gut sind: manche zum Schwimmen, manche zum Schnorcheln, manche zum Surfen (angeblich), manche für rundum-Sand-Peeling.

About 12 years ago, I had my one and only snorkeling experience. Seems I forgot how to prevent watering my nose… However, after a while, it is all fine. I am about to learn that a lot of Maui beaches are destined for just one thing: some are for swimming, some for surfing (they say), some for snorkeling and some offer all-over sand-peeling. Now this is okay for swimming and pretty good for today’s snorkel experience.

Es ist kein Wunder, dass ich nach kurzer Zeit einer weiteren Wasserschildkröte begegne. Auf Maui wird kaum ein Tag ohne Schildkröte vergehen – wer hätte gedacht, dass ausgerechnet ein träges Tier, das über enorme Geduld verfügt, mein Totem wird.

It comes as no surprise when spotting a turtle during my snorkeling session. There will be hardly any day on Maui without seeing one or more of these remarkable animals. It is against all odds that such a patient species is about to become my totem.

Am Nachmittag probiere ich die Food Trucks in Kihei aus. Gleich mein erstes Lunch Plate ist ein Volltreffer – vermutlich nicht ganz glutenfrei, aber eine Sünde wert. Ein wenig irritieren mich die Hähne (und einige Hühner), die überall herumstolzieren. Oder auf die Tische flattern und krähen. Einige der Tiere haben europäische Zeit, denn auch nachts kräht immer irgendwo ein Hahn danach.

Later on, it is time to check out the food trucks in Kihei. My first Lunch Plate is already convincing: might not be 100% gluten-free, yet worth a culinaric sin. I am only the tiniest bit irritated by the roosters (and chickens of all kind) swaggering around. They seem to be everywhere, like owning this island. Some live on European time and will crow their cocoos throughout the night right outside my bedroom.

Zum Sonnenuntergang spiele ich ein weiteres Strandkonzert. Meine Ukulele erinnert sich täglich an weitere Songs, so dass das Repertoire genauso wächst wie das Publikum.

Sunset is calling for another beach concert. My ukulele comes up with more and more songs, making the repertoire grow in line with my fanclub.

Die ersten 36 Stunden surf-frei auf Maui waren soweit okay. Die charmante Lady im Aloha Surf Shop erzählt, dass frühestens Sonntag wieder mehr Dünung und vernünftige Wellen zu erwarten sind. Von meiner Maui-Woche bleibt somit nur noch die Hälfte übrig – Zeit, weitere Strände und Unterwasser-Welten zu erkunden.

First 36 hours on Maui have been free of surfing, but okay. Due to the charming lady in Aloha Surf shop in downtown Kihei, a bit more of a swell (and: serious waves) is not to be expected before next Sunday. It cuts my planned surf-week into a half – hence, I will use the wave-waiting time and explore further beaches and more of the underwater-world.
