Als Profi-Surfer habe ich alles richtig gemacht: Stärkste Wellen des Tages abgepasst, den Bereich gewählt, in dem ausschließlich Locals herumhängen, und mir einen schicken grünen Neo geliehen. Für ein Selfie bin ich bei all der Action viel zu (nach-) lässig.

Following my instincts as a surf-pro, I take care to wait for the strongest waves of the day and decide for the spot where no beginners are to be seen, but local surf cracks. The suitable, green wetsuit comes as an add-on, and, of course, I am too cool to take a picture.

Auch wahr: Als Surf-Rookie habe ich fast alles richtig gemacht. Kräfte geschont, indem ich am Strand ein Board geliehen habe (anstatt es eine halbe Stunde herzuschleppen), leichtes Softboard gewählt, ordentlich aufgewärmt.

Following my experienced surf-rookie-routine, I aim to spare my forces. Hence, I rather rent the required equipment down by the beach instead of carrying my own over the steep way down to the sea. After a solid warm-up, I do some body-surf and only then decide to get started for the full show.

Gleich die erste Welle nordet mich ein. Mann, haben die Power hier! Die Schulter verreißt, das Board fliegt irgendwo rum, und ich lande in der Waschmaschine.

The very first wave tells me which world I belong to. Powerful as hell, I slightly hurt my shoulder, while losing first my board and then my orientation. Say hello to the ocean’s washing machine!

Nach einem zweiten, herumgeworfenen Versuch wird mir klar: ich übe mal besser vorne in der Gischt = im Whitewash. Ich surfe auch weiterhin wie ein Anfänger, von jetzt an aber wie einer, der weiß was er tut. Mehrfach lasse ich besonders starke Brandung vorbeiziehen, und muss laut lachen. Hab ich beim Surf-Verleih doch diskutiert, welches Board mit den ach so kleinen Wellen am besten klarkommt. Von weitem sahen die flacher aus…

Quickly, it becomes obvious: I rather keep to the whitewash. There, at least, I may pass as an experienced rookie = one who knows what to do. And what not to do. In between trials, I laugh about myself, how I discussed the suitable board regarding today’s tiny waves… It is like hiking: some things look flat from a distance, but turn into steep or huge once you come close.

Später bin ich heiß geduscht, guter Laune und gönne mir Mittagessen mit hiesigen Spezialitäten. Nebenbei sinniere ich darüber, warum die Wellen in der Bucht von Zarautz viel mehr Schub haben als die im offenen Atlantik vor Vieux-Boucau. Schätze, die Unterwasserlandschaft hat unterschiedliches Gefälle.

After a hot shower, I reward myself with local delicacies for lunch. When I think back to the sea at Vieux Boucau, the waves looked more impressive but turned out mostly powerless – the opposite to the Zarautz bay. Perhaps Zarautz might be a nice spot for a more systematic approach.

Zarautz hat hinter dem tollen Strand eine kleine, aber hübsche Altstadt. Die Bars und Cafés rund um den Hauptplatz mit Musikpavillon laden praktisch zu jeder Uhrzeit zum Verweilen ein. Ob Kaffee, Wein, Süßes oder Deftiges, hier verbringe ich ganz vortreffliche Mußestunden.

While I will need to take care of my shoulder the upcoming days, I am delighted to find more than just a beach at Zarautz. The historic part covers not more than a handful of streets, but is best when settling down for a drink at the main place.

Der Campingplatz liegt oben auf dem Plateau und ist bereits Anfang Mai erstaunlich ausgelastet. Um ans Meer oder in den Ort zu kommen, laufe ich entspannte 10 Minuten bergab oder stramme 15 Minuten bergauf – inklusive 439 Stufen, die auf nur 1 km den Höhenunterschied von rd. 400m verkürzen.

My campsite is located on a plateau 400 m above the sea. I realize that months of gym training pay off: as long as I avoid carrying heavy loads (surfboard, wetsuit, …), I do not mind neither the distance, nor the 439 stairs.

Rückblickend betrachtet habe ich meistens schönes Wetter. Für die Zwischenmomente baue ich eine solide Routine auf: kaum verdunkelt sich der Himmel, suche ich das nächste Lokal auf. Es ist nie weit, hat immer guten Kaffee, Wein und Tapas im Angebot, und trainiert die für Bilbao benötigte Flexibilität.

Retrospect, weather conditions are good during my days at Zarautz. Between sunny hours, rain comes in limited portions that hardly last longer than one hour. One of the wonderful aspects in Spain is the high quantity of bars/cafés, that will welcome you at any hour for coffee, wine or tapas.

Wenn ich genug durch den Ort geschlendert bin, genieße ich Meerblick mit Hector. Als erste Station in Spanien ist uns das hier eindeutig gelungen.

Hector has chosen an excellent spot for our first Spanish experience, with sea view included. It is a pity that it tends to be overcrowded, with no chance for free pitches in high season.

Zwischen dem Städtchen und dem Camping liegen die Überreste einer alten Anlegestelle für die Verschiffung von Eisenerz. Vor hundert Jahren ragte eine abfallende Brücke vom Festland über die vorgelagerten Inseln bis ins Meer, allerdings stehen davon nur noch Reste der Pfeiler.

Close to the campsite lie the ruins of a former ore embarkment. About hundred years ago, a long bridge has led from the mountains down to the sea. The leftovers are accessible and offer not only additional information, but also a nice view over the rough cliffs and rocky islands.

Und wer die Serie „Der Gärtner“ gesehen hat, wähnt sich kurz mal am Tatort in Galizien! (Danke an Markus für den Tipp, ich hoffe auf eine zweite Staffel.)

Those who have seen the series of “The Gardener” might take this for a crime scene from Galicia. I hope that they have a more harmless explanation for the red-white barrier…

Jeden Tag schlendere ich runter nach Zarautz und freue mich über das aktive Leben der Bewohner. Überall sportliche Locals: am Golfplatz, beim Fußballtraining, mit ihren Boards im Wasser oder an der einladenden Skate-Anlage.

Days at Zarautz offer a range of sporty activities, and they are all used by local inhabitants: from the golf course to the sea and it’s waves, from football training to an inviting skate park. Sometimes I look at the possibilities and regret that I have not started it in younger years. Still, I am happy that I have tried it at all.

Die Gegend rund um San Sebastián und Zarautz ist in alle Richtungen reizvoll: raue Steilküsten, einladende Sandstrände und im Hintergrund stolze Berge. Wechselwetter hin oder her, es ist eine tolle Gegend.

The entire region is tempting, with beautiful coast lines and solid mountains. Even with unsteady weather, it really is worth to spend some holidays in here.

Vor der Abreise kümmere ich mich noch um meine müden Muskeln und lädierte Schulter. Der Campingplatz hat einen kleinen Sportraum, der mir alle Möglichkeiten zur Regeneration bietet. Ist es nicht schön, älter zu werden? Ich weiß jetzt viel besser als früher, wie ich mit der ein oder anderen Materialermüdung umgehe.

Eventually, I use the campsite’s gym for some shoulder recovery. The good thing about getting old is the learning part: I am much better in dealing with aged material than I had been a couple of years ago.

Zu Beginn der neuen Woche zieht es mich weiter – bevor ich das Baskenland verlasse, locken eingeflogene Freunde und weitere Highlights.

Monday comes and with it my travel plans kick in. Before leaving the Costa Vasca, there is more to see and friends to meet.
