Eigentlich wollte ich in Hendaye (Frankreich) noch einmal surfen, bevor ich nach Spanien fahre. Doch dann…

I have planned to stop for a last day of surfing in Hendaye, France, before I continue to Spain. Then it appears to be a rather flexible day, when it comes to planning.

Als ich in Hendaye ankomme, ist das Wetter blau-grau, der Campingplatz im Winterschlaf und die freistehenden Optionen nicht ganz mein Geschmack. Noch während ich mich aus der Kleinstadt herauswühle, überquere ich die Grenze und bin in Spanien.

I could do with grey weather, but a closed campsite is another thing. The alternatives here look unappealing; hence I decide to drive on and look for Donastia San Sebastián.

Der beste (einzige) Stellplatz für ausgewachsene Campingmobile ist ein Volltreffer: Hoch oben (Training!), umgeben von Wald (Schatten) und nur 25 Minuten (bergab) fußläufig zum Surfstrand. Von hier aus liegt einem die ganze Stadt zu Füßen, alles lässt sich erlaufen. Vor allem kann man sich der Kulinarik unbesorgt hingeben, da sämtliche Kalorien vom 40-Minuten-bergauf-Heimweg absorbiert werden.

The best (and unique) camper parking in San Sebastián turns out to be a good choice: Located up on a hill (training!), in a forest (shadow) and on 25-minutes walking distance (downhill) to the surfing beach. From here, you can discover the whole city, all in the knowledge that any calory eaten will be used up in the 40-minutes-uphill way home.

Eine Stadt, die solche Strände hat, kann nur gut sein! Auch wenn ich hier nicht surfen gehe: wo Surfer sind, ist meist gute Stimmung. Ein guter Einstieg in die Stadt.

The pretty beach tells me that the city must be a nice one. Although I do not join the surfers here, it proves once more that surfing people spread good vibes.

Ich schlendere durch San Sebastiáns historisches Viertel, auch wenn fast alle Gebäude maximal 220 Jahre alt sind. Einzig die gotische Kirche San Bizente Eliza ist ein wenig älter, hast sie doch als einzige die Kämpfe und Feuer von 1489 und 1813 überstanden.

I continue my way into the historic part of San Sebastián, knowing that anything except for the church San Bizente Eliza is less than 220 years old, myself included.

Entgegen der vorherrschenden Meinung finde ich San Bizente interessant und einnehmend hübsch, so wie überhaupt die Stadt selbst.

Other than official sites claim, San Bizente looks on me interesting and attractive, like a synonym for the city itself.

Es ist eine schöne Stadt, ohne sich aufzudrängen. Eine Statue hier, ein Kirchengebäude dort, große Paläste, kleine Häfen und dazu die Strände. San Sebastián ist ein Ort für gute Laune und kleine Entdeckungen.

Beauty is unobtrusive here, yet all around nonetheless. A statue here, a church building there, palaces, small harbours and beaches – San Sebastián is a place for good mood and nice detections.

Ich erlaufe mir die schönsten Bereiche der Stadt, umrunde die Halbinsel, steige auf zum alten Fort, ich wandere auf und ab und erkunde manches zufällig und anderes geplant.

I walk all around the peninsula, hike up to the old fort, go to see things along the way or even on purpose.

Es ist lebhaft, auch wenn weniger als 200.000 Einwohner hier leben. Dazu finden sich historische Bauten wie der Königspalast aus alten Zeiten.

With less than 200.000 inhabitants, it is pretty vivid and comes with traces of history, such as a royal palace.

Auf dem vorgelagerten Urgull-Hügel trainiere ich für zukünftige Wanderungen. Ob verschlungene Wege oder Treppen, es ist eine hübsche Challenge mit Schatten und Aussicht.

The Urgull-hill is my exercise for upcoming hikes. I try out several paths and stairways, all for a nice challenge and some views.

In den schmalen Gassen der Altstadt angle ich nach Köstlichkeiten: Schinken, Oliven, Wein, Tapas und dann war da noch diese süße Spezialität…

The narrow streets in the historic quarter tempt with delicacies: Pata Negra, olives, wine, tapas and then they have a very special sweet cake…

Mit einer unterhaltsamen Mischung aus Spanisch, Pantomime und Englisch sammle ich regionale Produkte ein. Ein ganz wunderbarer Laden ist der von zaporejai in San Jerónimo, 21, Parte Vieja.

With a funny mixture of Spanish, gestures, and English, I get from one little shop to the next, collecting regional products all over (among others: zaporejai shop in San Jerónimo, 21, Parte Vieja).

Dank moderner Stadt-Entwicklung wurde aus einer Stierkampf-Arena ein hübscher Platz, gesäumt von Arkaden und Restaurants. Einzig die Nummern oberhalb der Fenster zeugen noch von der vorherigen Nutzung.

Modern times turned the former arena into a courtyard with arcades and restaurants. It is only when looking at the numbers on top of the windows that the former usage has left visible traces.

Die Kathedrale ist natürlich Pflichtprogramm. Sie spricht mich zwar nicht so an wie die kleinere San Bizente-Kirche, aber ihre Größe ist beeindruckend.

Seeing the cathedral means following my travel book, but not my taste in religious buildings. However, it is impressing due to the sheer size.

Auf Höhe der Kathedrale quert eine Brücke den Fluss, die als außerordentlich hässlich gilt. Stilmix hin oder her, ich habe es zunächst für eine Übertreibung gehalten – bis ich davor stehe.

Another travel-book-note is about the most ugly bridge possible. At first, I have been sure that the author exaggerates, but then…

Bald zieht es mich weiter, die Wüste wartet. Auf dem Weg dahin begleiten mich viele schöne Eindrücke und ein ganz fabelhafter baskischer Käsekuchen. Ich habe mich gründlich durch verschiedene Anbieter durchgefuttert, daher weiß ich: den mit Abstand besten gibt es bei den BASSK CHEESECAKERS in der Reina Regente, 4. Parte Vieja.

Before I move on to new destinations, I take with me an overall impression of good vibes and a portion of basque cheesecake. The ladder is best (based on thorough testing; I really did an effort on this!) at the store of BASSK CHEESECAKERS in Reina Regente, 4. Parte Vieja.

Mein Resümee von SanSebastián: sicherlich lohnenswert als City-Trip für einige Tage. Mit einer Basis zwischen Surfstrand und Altstadt lässt sich der Spaß im Meer kombinieren mit Shopping-Exzessen in den exzellenten Boutiquen und Shops, der Vielzahl an Tapas Bars und Restaurants und jeder Menge gutem Wein.

I resume that San Sebastián is probably worth a city trip for a couple of days. Located somewhere between the surfing beach and the most vivid quarter, it will be good for fun in the sea, shopping excesses and good food all over (plus wine, do not forget to taste the wine!).

Vieux-Boucau: hier habe ich surfen gelernt, mein Talent entdeckt, mich dann doch nicht in den Surflehrer verliebt, gut gegessen und viel Sonne gehabt – das wird sich wiederholen lassen, oder?

Once upon a time at Vieux-Boucau, I learned surfing, discovered my talent, stayed clear from falling in love with surf teachers, had wonderful dinners and sun, sun, sun. Now here I go again, ready for a solid re-run!

Natürlich bemühe ich mich darum, ohne Erwartungen frisch und offen in jeden Tag zu starten und achtsam im Hier und Jetzt zu leben. Das gelingt so gut, dass ich 16° C und Nieselregen, Nordsee-Wind und garstige See ganz gut hinnehme. Habe ja meinen Bus, mein Sofa und ein Bücherregal. Zum Glück haben wir keinen Dauerregen, jeden Tag kommen mehr trockene, manchmal sonnige Abschnitte dazu.

Being 100% open minded, without the slightest expectation, I am ready to welcome whatever the days bring. I say hello to 16° C, drizzling rain, stormy wind and rough sea, all happy about the comfy indoor-couch and a pile of good books. I am lucky, as every day offers some rain-free hours, and even the sun is visible every now and then.

Die Regenstunden nutze ich sinnvoll, schließlich wurde mir das Soorts-Hossegor Outlet empfohlen. In einem kleinen Industriegebiet haben sich etliche Shops mit Kleidung, Neoprenanzügen und neuen wie gebrauchten Boards angesiedelt. Einerseits surfe ich gerade nicht gut, aber andererseits…

The weather offers a perfect excuse for shopping excesses. A cute surfer with the most antique camp mobile recommended the outlet shops at Soorts-Hossegor: clothing, wetsuits, and: used surf boards. Despite my serious lack in surf skills, it cannot hurt to take a look…

Bei „Alltroc“ werde ich umfassend beraten. Das klappt so gut, dass ich mit einem geliehenen Board rausgehe, das nun getestet werden will. Ist mir egal, ob die Bedingungen schlecht sind – ich will wissen, ob ich mich mit dem Epoxy-Fieberglas-Board wohl fühle.

The experts at „Alltroc” listen to my needs, come up with good ideas and present a well-sorted choice of boards. I walk out of the store with a rental board, ready to test it in whatever conditions the sea offers.

Am Ende wird es… kein Longboard. Und auch kein Shortboard. Mir taugt der sogenannten „Malibu“-Shape am besten. Es kombiniert das Volumen eines Longboards mit einer Länge knapp unter 8 Fuß. Vor allem ist es leicht und wendig – gekauft! Wenn schon kein Super-Surf-Wetter, dann motiviert mich nun doch das neue Board, es jeden Tag aufs Neue zu versuchen.

Eventually, I end up buying – not a longboard, but a “Malibu”-shape. It combines the volume of a much longer board with a length below 8 feet. Above all, it is light and handy, and it motivates me to daily trials from now on.

Dann zeigt sich für 36 Stunden der Sommer in aller Pracht. Das wird mit Tapas im Yummy-Café gefeiert, die Ukulele spielt Sunset-Konzerte am Strand und nebenbei bringe ich noch early-bird-Surfing, einen Schlemmer-Einkauf auf dem Wochenmarkt und ein Musikfestival unter.

Then, finally, summer comes along and is willing to stay for 36 hours. I celebrate it with tapas and wine at the Yummy-café, sunset ukulele at the beach, early bird surfing on Saturday morning, market delicacies, and a music festival.

Passend dazu bin ich einer anderen Surf-Camperin in die Arme gelaufen. Zusammen zelebrieren wir den Sommerabend mit Sundowner am Strand, bis die Temperaturen wieder bei nächtlichen 14° C ankommen.

Just in time, I bump into another camper-girl that joins me in my taste for surfing and music. Together, we go for food and drinks at the C’rock Mais festival (Messange) and extend the evening at the beach until temperatures get back to 14°C.

Zur Abfahrt fülle ich Hectors Wasservorräte auf, da ich noch nicht weiß, ob ich die kommenden Nächte mit oder ohne Service stehen werde. Eigentlich weiß man im Leben ja nie, was vor einem liegt.

When departing, I take care to have my fresh water resources well-filled, as I count on the option of free parking (instead of campsites) on some upcoming nights. In fact, you never know what comes up in life, right?

Von den Retorten-Feriendörfern Frankreichs ist Moliets-et-Maa eins der ansprechendsten. Der Strand ist riesig, das Meer in einigen Bereichen surfbar und neben der guten Auswahl an Restaurants gibt es einen Camping-Stellplatz. Das ist genau das, wonach mir heute der Sinn steht.

Moliets-et-Maa is one of the typical French artificial holiday-villages, yet one of the nicer ones. The beach is huge, the shore offers a surf-spot and besides a good choice of restaurants, they have established a camper parking. Just right for me today.

Am Nachmittag spielt das Wetter mit, langärmlig in Shorts lässt es sich am Strand gut aushalten. Nur die Wellen sind eher aufgebauschte Brecher als heranrollendes Surf-Material. Ich sehe mittelmäßigen Surfern beim Scheitern zu und beschließe, dass mein Bord heute nicht ins Wasser geht.

The sunny afternoon lurs me to the beach. The only complaint, if any, is to the waterfront: breachers, but no good material in the sense of waves for surfing. I watch others fail and decide that my board remains dry for the time being.

Hector kocht heute mal nicht, ich gönne mir einen Restaurant-Abend. Anschließend kann die sinkende Sonne die Wolken nicht mehr aufhalten, also fällt das Strandkonzert mit Ukulele aus. Immerhin hat es zuvor noch für einen ausgiebigen Sonnentanz gereicht – irgendwann muss das doch helfen?!

Hector is out of kitchen service, as I eat out in one of the restaurants. Later, the lowering sun cannot fight back the clouds anymore, hence the sunset-ukulele concert gets cancelled. At least, I did hell of a sun-dance, all for improving weather in the upcoming week. Hopefully, the universe has seen it and reacts accordingly…
