Gestern, das war der Tag, an dem ich Walgesängen gelauscht habe. Und der Tag, an dem sich meine zufälligen Strand-Nachbarn den Kopf darüber zerbrochen haben, wo ich Wellen finden könnte. Sie kamen immer wieder auf DT Fleming zurück – keine Surfboards for rent, aber super für Bodyboards. Oder Boogie Boards, wie sie neuerdings heißen.

Yesterday I listened to the whales’ singing, today I am open for new adventures. Inspired by my beach-neighbours of the other day, I drive to DT Fleming Beach, known for strong current and short waves. Despite the fact that it lacks any option for rental boards, I go there and see how it turns out.

Am Fleming Beach gibt es nicht viel: Lifeguards, ein teures Hotel und natürlich einen Golfplatz. Dazu abgezählte Parkplätze und einen Sandstrand, der ganz ohne Riff steil in eine kurze Brandungswelle abfällt. Nachdem ich eine Weile (ganz Yoga, innerlich) schattig und entspannt am Strand saß, höre ich mich plötzlich am Kiosk sagen: “in blau, bitte.”

Not much to be told about Fleming Beach: small parking lot, lifeguards, expensive hotel with a golf course. The beach front is steep without riffs, resulting in one short (but strong) wave, breaking half a meter upfront the shore. Me, being totally at ease in the shades (inner yoga!), suddenly hear myself speak up at the beach hut: “…in blue, please.”

Mit meinem brandneuen Boogie Board werfe ich mich in die Fluten. Es ist lustig, auch wenn es nicht halb so viel Fun ist wie Surfen in Waikiki. Egal, eine neue Erfahrung ist es allemal, und es ist ideal, um meine neuen Surf-Shirts auszuführen.

Thanks to my brand-new boogie board, I jump in the waves, playful. Still, it is not half the fun compared to surfing Waikiki. However, I love trying out something new and it brings my surf shirts back into the ocean.

Die nordwestliche Küste von Maui ist eine Mischung aus ruhig und teuer – alles rund um Kapalua ist hübsch, irre gepflegt und dominiert von noblen Resorts. Weswegen ich eine gute Stunde weit weg wohne.

Northern Maui around Kapalua is dominated by expensive resorts – it comes as no surprise that my comfy condo is about an hour drive away.

Meine abendlichen Konzerte am Strand werden inzwischen routinierter: meine Finger müssen nicht ständig überlegen, meine Nervosität wird geringer. Mein Publikum zum Glück nicht.

Contrasting new trials throughout the day, I settle to steady routine with my sunset concerts. Fortunately, the nervousness when playing among other people has significantly reduced by now, I might be up for further concert tours from here on!
