Die hohe Kunst der Begeisterung: voll erfüllt. Noch bevor ich das Guggenheim Museum betrete, ist es um mich geschehen. Staunen, Bewunderung, und ganz viel Freude werden im Full-Power-Mode angeknipst, als ich rund um das Gebäude die Skulpturen betrachte. Garten-Hund „Puppy“ von Jeff Koons würde ich am liebsten mit nach Hause nehmen.

The Guggenheim really gets me. It starts before I even enter the building, thanks to the sculptures around it. One of the pieces stuns me most, due to the positive impact (makes everybody smile), the beautiful features (anyone who does not love puppies?), the crazy idea (…like a 3-dimensional garden formed as a dog) and the size.

Klar, dass sie hier nur Highlights zeigen – neben dem Gebäude von Frank Gehry wirken unauffällige Objekte wie Kleinkunst. Ganz nebenbei hat sich der Architekt in den Kopf gesetzt, die Ausläufer des Museums um die nächstgelegene Brücke herum zu bauen, als würde er sich auch die Umgebung einverleiben.

The museum designed by Frank Gehry requires outstanding art – anything else would be shallow and pale. Looking around, I wonder if the building is rather built through the bridge or around the bridge…

Im Inneren ist es endgültig um mich geschehen: ich verwandle mich in ein Kind auf dem Spielplatz, das gleichzeitig schaukeln, rutschen und Karussell fahren will. Das Gebäude ist der Wahnsinn!

Inside, my adult personality gets replaced by a child on the playground that tries simultaneously to swing, slide and ride the carousel. I want to soak it all in: the lines of the building, the expositions, the full show.

Die Kunst im Erdgeschoss ist größtenteils begehbar. Das Spielplatz-Kind rennt also ständig hinter und durch irgendwelche Werke, während mein Begleiter entspannt durch die Ausstellungsräume schlendert. Wir werden uns schon irgendwo wiederfinden.

On ground level, you can walk through the oeuvres. The artists have chosen their materials wisely, as nobody bothers not to touch the items.

Weiter oben wird es eher „klassisch“, mit Kunst zum Ansehen und ausnehmend guten Erläuterungstexten. Besonders eindrucksvoll finde ich den Teppich von El Anatsui aus Siegelstreifen von Alkoholflaschen. Er symbolisiert den Tausch „Alkohol gegen Sklaverei“ und thematisiert das schwierige Verhältnis von Europa und Afrika.

The upper levels are laid out rather classically: instead of touch & feel, it comes to watch and admire. I am delighted by some of the works, even more as solid (and short) explanations are available for each of it.

Sie haben auch ältere Klassiker im Bestand, beispielsweise von Yves Klein ein sehr typisches Bild (blau!) und auch eines, das man nicht sofort zuordnen kann. Ganz nebenbei entsteht aus der Geschichte dazu (ein Ausstellungsbesuch vor 20 Jahren) eine unerwartete Job-Perspektive, also: Die Kunst kann was!

When I stumble over a very typical Yves Klein painting, I send greetings to one of my favourite ex-colleagues, based on an exhibition we have seen together ages ago. Side-kick of it is a possible job-option, telling me something about funny ways of Karma.

Eigentlich bräuchte die Stiftung Guggenheim ein weiteres Gebäude, um mehr als einen Bruchteil ihres Fundus zu zeigen. Aber sei’s drum, heute genieße ich all das, was derzeit sichtbar ist.

The only complaint, if any, is the available space inside of the Guggenheim Museum. Frank Gehry’s concept is great for a building that comes as a huge sculpture of its own. Yet, huge parts of it are less appropriate for the presentation of regular art.

Hätten wir gewusst, wie sehr das Wetter heute von der Vorhersage abweicht, hätten wir uns vielleicht ein Re-Entry-Band geben lassen. Da wir jedoch grundsätzlich Optimisten sind, belassen wir es bei einem Kaffee im Bistro und lassen die Kunst noch etwas wirken.

Silly are those who believe the weather forecast… We leave out the re-entry option of the museum when exiting through the (well-sorted) gift shop to the cafeteria.

Zur Erholung besetzen wir im Touri-Bus die vordere Reihe und lassen uns durch die Stadt schaukeln. Trockenes Sightseeing statt nasser Füße!

Our next destination is a moving target: we make it to the upper front row in one of those red tourist-busses. Given the upcoming rain, a very decent decision for our sightseeing.

Das App-angezeigte schöne Wetter ist immer noch nass, was uns in das Kulturzentrum Palacio Azkuna Alhóndiga bringt. Das Jugendstil-Lagerhaus wurde von Philippe Starck liebevoll umgestaltet, erhält jedoch Abzüge in der B-Note. Wenn keine Veranstaltungen sind, ist es ziemlich leer und öd im Inneren.

When the predicted sun still is a wet one, we head for the cultural centre “Palacio Azkuna Alhóndiga”. Philippe Starck has turned the Art Nouveau building into something new – hard to describe, though. Especially, as the current absence of music or other events leaves the inner building empty and a bit dull.

Positiv zu vermerken sind die gemütlichen Sofas im Café sowie die angenehm große Bibliothek im Obergeschoss. Wir vertreiben uns die Zeit, bis der Regen abzieht.

We stroll around and can positively comment: the couches of the café are great for a relaxed coffee, and the library in the first floor is a nice one.

Nach einem Shopping-Abstecher in der Neustadt Ensanche zieht es uns erneut in Richtung Altstadt Casco Viejo. Die Kirchen lassen wir dieses Mal links liegen und steuern stattdessen die Plaza Nueva an.

We get back to the “Ensanche” quarter with its rows of shops, finding clothing that finally meet  the current temperatures on a well-based level. With this being set, it is time for another round in the historic quarter “Casco Viejo”.

Die Arkadengänge sind nicht nur schön und sehr wetter-tauglich, sie beherbergen auch etliche Bars.

The „Plaza Nueva“ is pretty nice, especially as the arcades contain at least half a dozen of finest tapas bars.

Die Übergänge von Aperitivo, Tapas und Abendessen sind fließend, zumal es leicht fällt, von einer Bar in die nächste zu wechseln. Für maximale Vielfalt bestellen wir überall nur ein Glas Wein und eine Runde Gildas & Tapas, bevor wir das nächste Lokal probieren.

The clock tells us that it’s a quarter to wine, and so we go for it: a glass of local white wine plus a choice of “Gildas” and other tapas in a series of bars. Despite the mixed-up climate, Norther Spain is great when it comes to gastronomy.

Noch vor Sonnenuntergang sind wir satt und angenehm fröhlich. Schätze, die Kunst wirkt positiv nach…

At the end of the evening (still early, from a Spanish perspective), we are fed up and cheerful. Guess this comes from the solid combination of fine arts and delicious tapas…

Neben all den Radwegen, dem gut ausgebauten Nahverkehr und den vielen Lokalen macht die Kunst Bilbao enorm lebenswert. Nur mit dem Wetter sollte sich einer vom Tourismusbüro noch mal was überlegen…

Besides city-wide bike lanes and well-developed public transport systems, the public spaces and the art makes Bilbao worth living. If only one of those tourist office guys could work on the rain quantity…

Da ich schon in einer anderen wunderbaren Stadt lebe, nehme ich das ein oder andere Bild von Puppy mit heim und frage meine Nachbarn, ob sie nicht im Garten vorne links so ein Kunstwerk nachpflanzen können. Glaube nicht, dass Jeff Koons bei uns vorbeischaut, um das Plagiat anzufechten.

Lucky me, that I do not seek a new home, as I live in a wonderful city already (plus: for all other destinations, there is super Hector). Yet, I will ask my neighbours at home if they please could do a re-run of the puppy-gardening sculpture in their front yard.
