what the tiny island is famous for

Southern Galicia seems pretty tempting with hints like “fjord-like bays” and “white beaches”, and yet I am less sure about it than expected. Seems like headlands circle the tamed sea, while it still is ruled by fishermen and tourism.

still (almost) all about fishing

Taking advantage of the fishing is best with Paella served at Aldea Vinoteca. What looks like a decent quantity turns out roughly two pounds of finest sea food – enough to share it with Hectors fridge.

unpaid advertisement: Aldea Vinoteca
sensational!

A Illa de Arousa seems undone: the promenade is nice, but far from being a splendid beauty. Same is true for the houses (typical, in Northern Spain): dressed up with useless decoration, but mostly out of proportion.

zooming in on the dolphins does not improve the scenery

Guess the lack of open sea and endless horizons leads to a harsh judgement on the entire island. Most probably, I am not among the preferred peer group.

it dows have some charm

The north-western edge is best: deep-green forests open up to sandy bays, interrupted by rocky elements.

stony gnarfs, I assume

The wide, sweeping bay near the lighthouse is lovely, and nearby, two or three beach bars await summer visitors. It is easy to see why the island is a popular holiday spot.

peaceful in low June

The southern end of the island is supposed to be the highlight: where the campsite ends, a nature reserve spreads out. Time to check it out myself.

Parque National de Carreirón is reserved for pedestrians only. A handful of paths winds through the light forest, leading to countless little bays.

Praia Naturista

Great to have established a nature reserve, yet it comes with a lack of maintenance. Everything looks a bit worn out (picknick tables unusable, paths that turn into sandboxes…), and traces from other visitors downsize the sensation of pure nature. Even worse, this beloved nature presents strange details itself: I prefer bald, blue water, without green hairy toppings.

Given the sheer number of beach bays, chances are good that everybody finds the most suitable one. Some sections even look like a copy of the Côte de Granit Rose (Bretagne), just less colourful.

Bretagne lookalike

Admirers of flat, clear sea will be happy on A Illa de Arousa.

Ostsee-Feeling (shallow water)

However, the white beaches are founded rather on clamshells than on fine sands. Walking barefoot will wake up the soles of your feet, as most of them are already broken but not yet ground.

pieksiger Untergrund

Another twist of ths protected nature catches me off-guard. One moment, I am peacefully reading a book, slightly wondering about the increasing popping noise. Turns out that underneath my towel is a mass of sand flees, eager to jump up, blocked by me and my tissue. It only takes 1,5 seconds to be upright and running…

Taking the facets of this island into consideration, I tend to accelerate the way towards the Portuguese border. The fairytale landscape of fjord-like bays and umpteen little islands is slightly out of my preferred setup.

Great that I have come this far to find it out myself. Hence, I will continue some more, knowing that I will probably not come back any other time near. Who knows, I even might detect unforeseen highlights or lowlights along the way…

good pathfinders hardly stop
