Jetlag ist was Feines: ohne Wecker stehe ich früh auf und mache mich lange vor Tagesanbruch auf den Weg zum Diamond Head.

Taking advantage of my jetlag, I start very, very early, up for the Diamond Head.

Meine Fitness hat zuletzt sehr gelitten, also entscheide ich mich, nicht nur den lächerlichen Aufstieg zum Diamond Head zu machen, sondern Waikiki Downtown aus hinzulaufen. Laut Google Maps bin ich dann in einer Stunde dort, plus 30 Minuten Aufstieg – lässig.

Aiming to improve my low-level fitness, I decide to walk not only the regular Diamond Head hike, but also got from central Waikiki to the crater entrance by foot. It should not take longer than a rough hour to get there, hence I am good to go.

Wie so oft erhalte ich unterwegs gut gemeinte Ratschläge, alle aus der Sicht 100%iger Autofahrer. Es gibt Staaten, in denen kommt niemand auf die Idee, eine Distanz per pedes zu überwinden. Joggen als Selbstzweck ist ok, für alles andere gibt es das Auto. Anstelle des direkten Wegs zum Krater-Eingang umrunde ich den Diamond Head Vulkan zu 3/4. Das ist ineffektiv, aber auch sehr schön: die meiste Zeit laufe ich sanft bergauf mit Blick auf die Küste und die ersten Anzeichen des neuen Tages.

History repeating: Any guidance along the way comes from car-perspectives only. Apart from round-course jogging, nobody in the U.S. considers walking an appropriate kind of transportation. Consequently, I make 3/4 of the full circle around the Diamond Head volcano – rewarded with wonderful views over the sea, yet a bit ineffective.

Gute 90 Minuten brauche ich bis zum Tunnel, der ins Innere des Kraters führt. Von dort aus startet der eigentliche Wanderweg bis zum höchsten Punkt des Diamond Head (232 m). Für hiesige Verhältnisse ist der Aufstieg abenteuerlich: holprige Wege, endlose Treppen, Geländer nur auf einer Seite. Dazu unbeleuchtete Tunnelabschnitte und Natur in greifbarer Nähe. Der Wahnsinn!

After 90 minutes, I reach the entrance of the crater. From here on leads the regular hiking path uphill, eventually reaching the highest point of Diamond Head (232 m). Given other experiences across the U.S. (Disneyland, Las Vegas, to name some), this is extremely adventurous. Rough grounds, steep stairways, only half-way secured by railings. As far as I see, those taking it for serious in a considerable paste make it just great. Others get some scratches before their return into civilization.

20 Minuten später erreiche ich die Aussichts-Plattform. Mein längerer Hinweg führt dazu, dass mehrere Bus-Ladungen Asiaten bereits durch sind – jetzt ist es zwar nicht leer, aber man steht sich auch nicht völlig auf den Füßen.

20 minutes later, I reach the platform. Thanks to my stretched promenade earlier today, it is now less crowded with the first rush of sunrise-Asian-bus-tourists already gone. Still, a bit of golden morning light can be caught.

Ursprünglich hatte ich den Plan, heute noch eine Runde zu surfen, also breche ich auf und trete den Rückweg an. Dabei ahne ich noch nicht, dass eine fehlerhafte Bus-Info später das Fazit auf rd. 15-18 km Fußweg hinausläuft. Für eine Wanderung mit nur 230 Höhenmeter eigentlich kein Problem, in neuen super-Trecking-Urlaubs-Schuhen jedoch gut für 5 Blasen an den Füßen.

My plan for the day included an hour surfing, so I better get going back to Waikiki. When leaving the lookout of Diamond Head, I do not know that a wrong bus-information will get me to a full walking day of something between 15 and 18 km in total. Which would be okay for a hike with only 230 m altitude difference – if not for the new trecking shoes and 5 blisters all over my feet…

In Oahu habe ich meine Ziele sauber abgehakt: Surfing Waikiki Beach, Bus-Ausflug zur North-Shore, Aufstieg Diamond Head. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt weiß ich noch nichts von spiegelglattem Pazifik, der meine groß aufgehängten Hawaii-Ziele ins Wanken bringen könnte…

For Oahu, I crossed off all items on my list: surfing Waikiki beach, excursion to Northshore, Diamond Head hike. As of today, I am free from knowledge about lake-like pacific flat waters and how that might endanger all of my famous Hawaii plans…
